Life has been busy recently. Penny has been working big hours on her new rotation in the neo-natal unit, and about a month ago I started a new part time job with Federated Mountain Clubs. The grand plan is that Penny goes half time, which happens in mid July, and we spend heaps of time together as a family, but at the moment we are passing Mae around like a beach ball. A chunky, smiley, energetic little beach-ball. I love spending time with my girls. Fat Freddy's Roady gets those moments pretty well:

Mae is great. We keep on trying not to expect every day spent with her to be damn cool, but so far they all have been. Like her mother she doesn't get sick much, like her father she likes sleeping. She is an outside girl, if we aren't out the door by 8am she will be putting her gumboots on, wrong feet usually, and bringing me my shoes. She will climb into her backpack and start shouting out if she senses that I'm stuffing around. She has lots of words, but communicates mainly through her eyes. She looks after us, making sure we eat dinner, and dried apricots and persimmon as well and she has a wicked sense of humour.
My new job is great. It is very much a jack of all trades master of none position in what is quite a small independent NGO. Simply put, FMC's main purpose is to advocate on behalf of outdoors people in regard to the back-country and how it is managed. Obviously right up my alley. Ten years after I left my DOC job I am working again for an organisation fully aligned to my own priorities.

Just back from a three day tramp on a Saturday. A good feeling. We have finally had our first overnight experience in the Ruahines, a place we have been saving up to explore when our usual haunts become too familiar. It was a three generational trip, with Neil and Doff Kane, and Aunty Meg joining us. We tramped first up to the magnificent Rangiwahia Hut. An easy but spectacular track to a beautiful beautiful spot, then on to Triangle Hut before returning up the SE ridge of Mangahuia and down the Deadmans track.

It was straight forward tramping even in quite claggy conditions, but opened my eyes to the opportunities for great traverses of tussocky tops, and the lovely forests that this range still contains despite its reputation as the place where the forest collapsed after the introductions of possum and deer. I look forward to getting back there for more exploring, although will be avoiding the leatherwood as much as possible. Not much Ruahine bushbashing for me please.
We are home now after a fantastic little holiday down Nelson way for a couple of weeks. Great to cheer on the wedding of Sarah and Ben and spend some time with my parents and the little one. The last week was spent tramping in Nelson Lakes on the Travers/Sabine circuit with Greig, Clare, Ebba, Megan and Brent. Here is a little slideshow of our trip:
In December we travlled to Tasmania for a holiday with some good friends. The trip was centred around a crossing of Tasmania's alpine region via the Cradle Mountain track, their Great Walk. It was a great trip in many ways, but especially spending some quality time with people, including our little girl. We found it not too difficult at all with Mae and plan to keep tramping with her as long as the knees will hold out.
Merry Christmas all. We hope that everyone that occasionally reads this blog had a great year and gets a good opportunity to relax with family and friends over the summer.

We had a big year. Little Mae has grown from a baby into a toddler and going along with her on that journey has kept things a changing. Penny began the year at home and is now back working as a Paediatric Registrar. Jamie began the year managing the Valley Flyer & Runciman bus companies and ended it as a house dad.

There are plenty of highlights already recorded in this blog, but looking at the last few months, Tasmaniacs stands out, our annualish reunion with a group of friends, which this year was centred around the Cradle Mountain tramp in Tasmania.

We love taking Mae out in the outdoors, and she seems to love being out there. The Cradle Mountain tramp has motivated us to plan further adventures for this summer while she is still relatively portable (though getting heavy). We are lining up tramps in Nelson Lakes, as well as our local ranges, and bike rides in the Central North Island. The great work done by so many people to create NZ Cycleways is certainly going to benefit the likes of us.

The main purpose of this blog now seems to be to record Mae's development and provide a critical mass of cute photos to family and friends. Here is another one. Immediate family got a whole book load for Christmas. Our secondary goal in providing these photos and trying to live a reasonably enjoyable outdoor life is to encourage our friends to have kids, so they have to go as slow as we do.

We have both been staying reasonably fit, doing bits and pieces of orienteering and mountain running. Penny is a hardcore cycle commuter. Karori to Porirua currently. Jamie and Mae wander around stoat trapping, mtb track building, or on easy days visit Zealandia or the Zoo. We are thinking about playcentre next year which might constrain the lifestyle choices a little.Plenty of plans for summer will report on their outcomes here. Kia kaha and merry Christmas.
It was great to have Darren Ashmore and Rebecca Smith stay a couple of times recently with their daughter Mia. Mia is very close to Mae in age and what she's into. Mia and Mae were hilarious, the beginnings of a real little midget gang. There is a serious rivalry underpinning this relationship though, Mae will be trained to smash Mia at orienteering to make up for my continued beating at the hands of her father for the last decade.
Life as a house dad seems more attune, and dependant upon, the seasons than life as bus company manager. The working day is of course meaningless, fridays are when everyone else is more likely to want to drink a beer and weekends stick out only because of the extra company. Spring has brought more light, more rain and more weeds to the 1000 square metres fenced off enclosure of 70 Chamberlain Road.

The washing has been rotting on the line as the Cameila flowers rot on their stalks. The Rhododendron has had more of a prune so we can see more of the neighbours flowering magnolia and the concrete slabs of commercial Karori. The Tui's are so prolific that the other birds keep a very low profile, except for the odd bold kaka. The vegetable garden is fully planted with lots of pony shit added to the mix, and the old rat that used to live in our ceiling has departed this world courtesy of the DOC 200 trap by the compost heap.
Maebo continues to grow and amaze us. She is walking now, kind of, she does it best in the nude, but them when she falls without the padding of a nappy she gets a little angry. Our favourite trick at the moment is a family howl, like a pack of wolves. Maebo gets it, both the action and the feeling. She tilts her head back howls, makes eye contact and laughs.
Penny's challenge is work/life balance - too much of two good things, and to make the most of the time she gets with Mae, not to bring the days baggage to those moments. Mine has been the problem of having too much time to think, and too much time to regret some of the weak options I have taken. But mostly Mae brings us into the moment and plans for the future are very postive, if a little uncertain as we figure out how to manage having a family, 1.5 careers and some will to contribute to our communities.
We have enjoyed several great occasions recently with friends and family. Penny recently won the Mukamuka Munter mountain race and we are both getting fit for lots of orienteering, running, biking and tramping over summer. I got a little stale for a while with the outdoor life, but have come around to the conclusion that my first instincts in life were pretty good. There is not much more important that enjoying and preserving our outdoors.
It is raining now, on a quiet Thursday morning, but the end of winter has been awesome in Wellington. Balmy days spent running with the buggy, mucking around in the garden and having the odd adventure.
It hasn't been all about Mae. I even managed to get out for an inflatable mission down the lower Otaki Gorge with Liam Drew (good fun in about 20 cumecs). The surf-ski has also had the odd outing. There has also been orienteering recently on Wrights Hill and Maungakotukutuku, 20 years on I still love orienteering.
Mae and I have been doing a lot of buggy running. It makes you see tracks and roads in a whole new light. Options are more limited, but it is quite fun figuring out a good loop that is reasonable.
Evan Wilson (and brother Jim) were climbers active in Arthurs Pass in the 1930's. I have his map of the time framed on our wall with its many notations of first ascents and vagaries of travel. I love this photo, very much mountaineer/man at his peak, with a far sighted gaze. Celmisia in his pocket and holding his mates ice axe for the photo - you can't tell me they used two of these beasts.

Evan and Jim's best first ascent in my knowledge was that of Arrowsmith. I couldn't find an account of this scouring the internet, but I found an interesting story nonetheless. They were involved peripherally in a mountain tragedy in 1932 when three trampers were benighted on Whitehorn Pass on the three passes route. One froze to death during the night, the second took off and died after taking a fall in the Taipoiti river while the third headed back west over the Whitehorn and stumbled across prospectors in the vicinity of Park Morpeth Hut.

One of these prospectors was Jim Wilson, who hurried over to Bealey to raise the alarm. The subsequent CMC search party was led by his brother Evan! A clip from papers past below. I will add any further information I find about Evan and Jim's mountaineering time to this post.
(my illusions have been shattered;-) the first ascent of Arrowsmith was actually in 1912. Evan and Jim Wilson, along with Andy Anderson pioneered the south-west ridge in 1931

The weather was beautiful and this roadend must be the most beautiful in the Tararuas, the forest is so magnificient and the river sparkles its way down the valley. As is habit, we only took photos of Mae. She is just getting to the age where we can put her down in the bush and she can crawl around and not look too vulnerable. In fact she looks quite happy in a garden gnome sort of a way.
We have been busy - well Penny has, Mae and I just sort of cruise around at a relatively constant pace - somewhere between bobbling and jolting.

Yesterday we arrived back, a day later than expected, from Dunedin where Penny was doing a paediatric life support course. Mae and I had great time cruising around some of the best sights of the city and surrounding hills. Leith Saddle, Swampy summit and the Pineapple track was a great day out, as was Orokonui eco-sanctuary, Victory beach and even dare I say it, the Dunedin Town Belt, which continues to grow taller and darker than I remember.

It was also awesome to catch up with Kate and Matilda and meet the gorgeous Frida. Mae is no longer a little baby in the baby wrestling competitions!
This is the story of a little family trip to a really cool spot, Kahurangi Point lighthouse.

Back last century I did a 30 day walk with Zane Snook around much of Kahurangi National Park. With limited reading material, the park map we had was pored over, and future missions memorised. Kahurangi Point lighthouse was one of those and finally last month I got there, with Penny and Mae.

Kahurangi Point is more of a change of angles than a peninsula. It signifies the abrupt end of the wild and harsh Heaphy Coast and the beginning of the eastward trending sandy beaches that culminate in Farewell Spit. To get there you keep heading west from Golden Bay to Westhaven (Whanganui) inlet, you pass through the inlets forests and over its causeways, then the limestone farmland and windshaped coast of Paturau before finally getting to the roadend at Anatori. From Anatori it is a 4-8hour walk down the coast to the Lighthouse Keepers hut.

The Wairoa river is one of the many arms of the inlet bridged.

What keeps so many people away from Kahurangi Point, apart for the remoteness of the road and the myriad of other attractions in the region, are the tales of big rivers and sinking sands along the coastline. It is true that there are three places along the 10km coastline that you really want to be at close to low tide; the Anatori Bluffs, Anaweka Estuary Mouth and Big River. This spatial reality morphs a relaxing stroll along a beach into a stressful striding march. The first secret is that the Anatori Bluffs can be taken out of the equation by following the farmroad from Anatori to Turimawiwi this is perhaps the best way in for first timers.

Penny and Mae on the road past Anaatori

The second secret is that the Anaweka mouth and Big River are only about 45 minutes apart and at low tide (and not in flood) they are quite easy wades. The tides times are more similar to Nelson than Colllingwood. We had no trouble, wandering down the coast with the accompaniment of some friendly 4wd bikers. After we crossed big river we relaxed and let Mae play for a while among the sculpted limestone rocks.

There are not many places in New Zealand where limestone meets the sea and this makes for some great reefs and scenery. The reef at Kahurangi Point is a pearler at low tide. Goood sized mussels above the low tide mark, big Octopuses patrolling the pools and a healthy range of reef fish. Next time I am taking my snorkel (and wetsuit).

The hut is quite unique, in that it was initially built for a lighthouse keepers large family (back in those days when two familys could justify the need for a school house). After the Murchison earthquake in the 1920's in which the original houses near the lighthouse was destroyed, the keepers moved to the current site and farmed much of the surrounding land which is now slowly returning to bush. The history is well recorded in the hut which features a school project of one of the daughters describing life there in around the 1940's. The best feature of the hut itself must be the bath which runs off a wetback, a first for me in the NZ backcountry.

Mae tells me she expects a bath in every hut

From the hut there are a few cool little things to do, the reef of course, and you can also explore little tracks and creeks to find the sand pass, which takes you to the beach to the south and the cool little waterfall a little way up Kahurangi stream. There was a boogie board at the hut for the purposes of sand sliding. At low tide you can come back around the coast to the hut and check out the lighthouse (there is no track, just find the route through the likely grove of Nikau.
Because of the tides we began our walk back up the coast around 5am. Mae was well bundled up and loved being out in the moonlight. We didn't need our torches even with the moon at our backs. We were hoping to sneak through the Anatori bluffs but arriving at the start of them the spring tide was too high, and we were being chased by a southerly front, and we had a small baby (the excuses just keep collecting), so we have a new piece of coastline for next time we are down that way. Highly recommended little bit of country.
What more could you want in a girl?
In related news Dangerous Daddy is now fulltime at home, so perhaps a few more write-ups coming up. Firstly perhaps our recent expedition to Kahurangi point lighthouse.
We had a daughter yesterday, Mae Elsie. One name just because we liked it; the other after Penny's grandmother who is an amazing lady. She was born just before lunch time after a long night of labour. Penny was incredible: focused, stoic and calm. What a woman I have somehow ended up with.

Mae is a delight, she has startling eyes, that pop open suddenly, and long delicate fingers that get lost in the long sleeves of her ill-fitting one pieces.

I lay down tonight with my daughter on my chest, a beer in my right hand and phone in my left and felt the closest I ever have to contented. Time slipped away.

For the last 10 months since we returned from Nepal time has been predominant; 60 hour working weeks for Penny; myself trying to keep buses and drivers on schedule. Weekends have been spent trying to catch up (rather than do stuff) with friends or keeping on top of the garden.

Yesterday with about an hour to go in labour. The reality of our situation overcame me and I cried. Not the burping and the feeding and the changing nappies. The reality that when a child comes into the world a little bit of us is passed on, and soon that will be all that is left. When Mae Elsie entered the world a little bit of my grandads that have both passed on were reborn. I look forward to searching for their quirks as time goes by.

In the meantime though I am enjoying my wife and daughters needs being my only timetable.

Kia kaha.

I recently got my hands on the final photos of our last Nepal trek - the "Three Passes" of the Everest region. I have blogged earlier about the Kongma La and Cho La, but finally a few words and photos on the final pass the Renjo La.

Our tight-fistedness had finally worn us down. Reaching Gokyo I would have been down under 80kg for the first time since my mid-teens and I was wondering why I wasn't so keen to go exploring in the beautiful mountains. Even the wander up the valley from Gokyo to "scoundrels view", the easiest view of Everest had seemed a challenge. In this context lugging our bags over the 5400 Renjo La seemed a bit of a challenge. In the end we suffered away and it wasn't that hard. The eastern side has a well marked track through the choss while the steeper western side has had steps cut in recent years lowering the difficulty several notches on any scale. The weather also held for the crossing of the pass, and the views were simply stunning.
The snippets of view on the way up though, were nothing compared to the vast expanse of mountains which greeted us on the Renjo La itself. Wild, strange forms of ice, rock and snow...
We were had it, well Sam was actually cranking it through alright - it must have been those extra fat stores he started with paying their due.
Photography, discussion and even contemplation were at a minimum, it was down into the valley towards the village of Thame, where in the mist we found a guesthouse, then onwards down again to Namche Bazaar, then Lukla and out. The most dangerous airport in the world one last psychological hurdle to overcome before we were suddenly plonked into the middle of Kathmnadu. Crazy days that like them all eventually come to an end. What have we gained from our travel in Nepal...I'm unsure...we didn't push our boundaries as such, or gain a new perspective on life we hadn't had before, we were certainly reminded of our fortune in being kiwis, with coin, but what does this really do for you? We certainly got to spend some awesome time with my side of the family, which was amazing, we were reminded that simple lives can be happy (although hard) and we saw once again that humans will occupy every single niche in nature given half a chance.
I think I'm still overexcited about our new camera. I can't run right now, so last night at Red Rocks I had to sift around taking photos while Penny and Elo went running. It was cool just sifting around appreciating things and looking for points of interest and beauty in terrain I normally run through appreciating the more raw sensations of flexing muscles, rain in my face, throbbing wind in my ears, etc.
Getting these Nepal blogs done is like pulling teeth - except that I have a few less teeth than Nepal blogs to pull.

The ever so slightly intrepid Stewart family followed on their exploration of the Kali Gandakai with a ten day trek from Tatopani in the west to Dhampus in the east with an excursion to Annapurna basecamp thrown in. Slightly more ambitious than we had planned, but once you're committed there is no going back.

We came from the left - up and down the valley - then down to the right

The lower parts of this trek were through much more heavily agricultural country. The homeland of the Gurung people. This is part of the original "Annapurna Circuit" but in the most part its popularity is waning due to the development of the Kali Gandaki road. This meant there were copious and competitively priced guesthouses for us to stay in at most places. The scenic shit hole of Tadapani being a notable exception. During the trip we lost Gemma, I dropped her off one day down at the nearest road end (bottom middle of above picture). Mainly my memories are of relaxing times with some stunning views and some lovely forests, a beautiful little part of the world.
From Poon Hill the walk really was mostly downhill. With just a few little ups. We certainly saw some extreme suffering of people heading the other (wrong) way. We cruised through the rhododendron forests, the millet fields and the terraced valleys and on up the Modi Khola towards Annapurna basecamp.

Our eventual arrival at Annapurna Basecamp was quite a momentous occasion for the family. we have always had a copy of Herzog's "Annapurna" in the bookshelf but despite this it almost seemed a mythical place, far far away. There was a huge sense of satisfaction at having made it, which was awesome. As Mum pointed out this was sort of like the climax of our trip, it was all (literally) down from here, and it certainly felt like that as we turned our backs on the mountains and headed down. You can almost see it in our faces I think.
The walk out was peaceful. It actually only took three days, we must have been getting fit. I can't remember much about it, and we don't have many photos. Kangchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain, rests in the remote nort-eastern corner of Nepal on the border of Tibet and India's Sikkim province. Kiwi Norman Hardie was part of the first ascent in 1954, while in the 1970's the New Zealand Alpine Club staged an expedition to the nearby north face of Jannu, now recognised as one of the toughest challenges in world alpinism. This expedition was famously recorded in Graeme Dingle's book "Wall of Shadows". Less well known though, is that for over 20 years, a small group of ANZAC's have been quietly assisting in the healthcare and education of the local Sherpa people...this talk will tell the story of this project and the effect of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake centred on the area in September last year.

Australian Cherie Bremer-Kemp made two attempts on the peaks of Kangchenjunga in the 1980's, one of which resulted in the tragic loss of her husband and nearly her own life. She was rescued and cared for by the local Sherpa people, who she pledged to return and assist. She has honoured this pledge, and with the help of her new husband, kiwi Rob Rowlands, has spent the last twenty years building, maintaining and staffing schools and medical clinics in the area. On the projects most recent expedition, Dr Penny Kane, who was asked by Rob and Cherie to provide medical training on womens and childrens health to the local healthcare workers, and her husband Jamie Stewart, were caught up in a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that destroyed one of the schools.
Cherie, Rob, Penny, and Jamie will all be in Weliington on Wednesday, 8 February, to tell their Kangchenjunga stories and raise money for the rebuild of Folay school. Raffles will be held for valuable autographed books on the
area and donations will be accepted. The evening is kindly hosted by the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club.
